Original Content: Celebrating International Women’s Day

On this International Women’s Day, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible women who inspire me every day. While we may be a minority on this blog, it’s important to acknowledge and honor the achievements of women in all walks of life.

This year, I decided to ask my colleagues to share their thoughts on what International Women’s Day means to them. Mary and Meredith, two amazing women I work with, graciously shared their insights, adding depth and diversity to this celebration.

Let’s start with Meredith, a talented photographer known for her kindness and impeccable taste in movies and TV shows. She reflects, “International Women’s Day allows me to look back on my journey as a photojournalist and the women who inspired me along the way, including my mentors. It’s also a time to look ahead and support the next generation of women in photography and music, documenting their rise and impact on the Chicago punk scene.”

Mary, another remarkable colleague, brings her feminist spirit to the forefront. She shares, “I’m proud to be a feminist, symbolized by a tattoo of ‘Bread and Roses’ on my bicep, a tribute to women’s suffrage and worker’s rights. I love photographing fierce femme-fronted bands and witnessing the growing representation of women in punk shows, both on stage and in the audience.”

As for myself, I’ve come to understand the significance of International Women’s Day in recent years. The birth of my daughter was a turning point, motivating me to fight for a more equal and inclusive world for her and all women. I’ve learned that sisterhood is not a competition but a collective journey toward empowerment and support.

Being a woman in the music industry has its challenges, but I find strength in the inspiring women who have paved the way, from iconic figures like Patti Smith and Dolly Parton to personal mentors and friends who have shown me the true meaning of sisterhood.

So, on this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the achievements of women past, present, and future. Together, we can create a more inclusive and empowering world for all.
