Unveiled: The Unreleased Spider-Man Multiplayer Game by Insomniac

In a surprising turn of events, a leaked trailer has surfaced, offering a glimpse into what could have been Insomniac’s next big project: “Spider-Man: The Great Web.” This multiplayer spin-off game, reportedly canceled before its announcement, promises an ambitious fusion of the Spider-Verse with cooperative gameplay.

Narrated by Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker, the trailer sets the stage for a collaborative adventure, emphasizing the necessity of teamwork in combating the notorious Sinister Six. Players were teased with the opportunity to embody iconic Spider-heroes such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, and even Venom. Moreover, the trailer hints at traversing diverse universes akin to the acclaimed animated Spider-Verse films, expanding the game’s scope beyond the confines of New York City.

Although the gameplay showcased echoes the acclaimed mechanics of Spider-Man 2 on PS5, fans were left disappointed to learn of the game’s alleged cancellation. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier revealed in 2023 that “Spider-Man: The Great Web” met its demise long before its public unveiling, joining the ranks of other shelved Sony projects like The Last of Us multiplayer game.

The leak stems from a substantial data breach suffered by Insomniac, unleashing 1.7 terabytes of internal files onto the internet. This breach, following a ransomware attack in December 2023, not only provided an unwelcome peek into the studio’s development processes but also exposed sensitive employee information, causing significant distress among Insomniac’s workforce.

As fans lament the lost potential of “Spider-Man: The Great Web,” the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges and vulnerabilities faced by game developers in an increasingly connected digital landscape.
